How to Make a Healthy Snack Bento Box

One of my husband’s clients at work gave him a Sugarfina bento box for Christmas, filled with eight types of gourmet candies. Their concept is pretty neat– you pick out the size of bento box you’d like (they have 3 – 32 piece boxes) and then fill all the little boxes with the candies. Ours was filled with champagne gummies, chocolate covered raspberries, gingerbread malt balls and a bunch of other Christmas themed candies.

The candies looked and smelled SO good that we made a rule: we can only eat from the bento box when we’re together, and we can only choose a couple pieces from each box. We wanted to make the box last as long as possible and really savor each little candy, since there weren’t many of them. This was all my husbands idea, by the way.

A couple nights a week we sit on the couch together and watch our shows. Those nights we’d get out the bento box and carefully lift up each lid and taste a couple candies from each section, and let them melt slowly and savor each bite. After about a month of this, our candy box was finally gone. I was pretty proud of our self control! We weren’t restricting ourselves though– it was like a fun tasting game every time we got out the bento and took a couple sweets from each section.

I was about to throw away the empty Sugarfina box when my husband had another great idea– why don’t we reuse the boxes? We could fill them back up and keep our fun bento box tasting game.

So, the next time I was at Sprouts, I went to their bulk foods section and picked out eight treats to refill our bento box.  I chose:

  • Dried cherries
  • Banana chips
  • Sesame sticks (Nick’s favorite)
  • Peanut butter filled pretzels
  • Yogurt covered raisins (my favorite)
  • Chocolate covered almonds
  • Dried pineapple
  • Candied walnuts

I bought a scoop of each treat, which cost about $12 total. Nick loved opening up the bento box for the first time and seeing what treats I had refilled! We’ve eaten out of it twice so far and there’s about half left of each box— so in total, about four servings, and should last 2-3 weeks if we only treat ourselves to the bento box about once or twice a week.

If you want to recreate this concept, look around at Walmart, Michael’s or Amazon for a jewelry/tool compartment storage box. I found this one on Amazon which holds 11 treats. Shop around and try to find one with fairly large compartments.
