This recipe was originally posted in January of this year, but I wanted to take some time to update the post and add something fun – a VIDEO! I love making smoothie bowls. They’re perfect for all seasons. Refreshing the summertime, and reminiscent of warmer weather when you’re in the dreads of winter.

Smoothie bowls are so customizable. You can add anything you want for toppings! I love the combination of sour kiwi, crunchy almonds, sweet coconut flakes, and fresh strawberries.

I have one of the newer Vitamix blenders and I have been using it almost every day. Smoothies are amazing because you can pack in so many fruits and veggies, which are high in vitamins A and C, potassium and magnesium. If you have trouble getting in your three servings of fruit and five servings of veggies a day, smoothies are definitely the answer. This is especially useful for kids who don’t like their fruits and veg– sneak em’ in!

Smoothies are easy– all you need is a good blender. It’s cheaper to make smoothies at home– restaurants can charge over $5 for a smoothie (a small one!), which you can make at home for less than $1.

Other great reasons to drink smoothies– they’re full of fiber (keeps you full longer), they’re hydrating, and you can add super-foods! One of my fav super-foods is chia seeds. They act as a thickener (they absorb liquid) and in this bowl, helps create the sorbet texture. Chia seeds are also high in fiber and heart healthy omega-3’s.

Turning your smoothie drink into a smoothie bowl is one fun way to switch things up– plus you get to add fun toppings! To make a smoothie bowl, reduce the liquid in your normal smoothie by about half. I topped mine with fresh sliced strawberries and kiwi, chopped almonds and coconut flakes. Be sure to buy unsweetened coconut flakes if you’re watching added sugar.

Turmeric is the secret ingredient in this bowl– while it’s in the title of the recipe, you can’t taste it at all. Turmeric is known for being a powerful antioxidant and it’s anti-inflammatory, and may help reduce the risk of certain diseases, like heart disease.
