You may or may not know that my family is half Polish and half German. My mom’s side came over from Poland in the early 1900’s (mom correct me if I’m wrong). They’ve passed down many authentic Polish recipes, including one of my holiday favorites, strudel! Every year, on Christmas Eve, everyone who’s in town on my mom’s side gets together to make handmade strudel. We eat the finished product on Christmas morning, always served with polish kielbasa.

My dad’s side is German! My Oma grew up in Germany and met my Opa while he was stationed over there in the army. We love my Oma’s cooking. When we visit her, she makes potato pancakes, cucumber salad (the best), homemade pickles, schnitzel (fried pork) and usually some type of German sausage or kielbasa as well. It’s amazing.

Today’s recipe instantly takes me back to my Oma’s kitchen and Christmas mornings! The smell of cabbage, onions and flavorful kielbasa sausage is truly mouth-watering. The red wine vinegar is really the star ingredient– once you add that to the skillet, the whole dish transforms. I found this recipes originally over at Peace, Love & Low Carb and modified it to make a lightened up version– used olive oil instead of butter (and less) and substituted turkey kielbasa which has 60-70% less fat than regular sausage.

  1. How exciting! What a generous giveaway. I would spend my amazon card on foodie type things for sure! Cooking props, food, nut butters, kitchen essentials, and all things food, nutrition and cooking! :)

    1. I would probably spend mine on the same :)

  2. Definitely a few things for my husband and me (our favorite popcorn from an Amish store in Iowa + bulk nuts and seeds), but mostly specialty food for our sick cat. He needed to lose some weight, but definitely not from illness — time for bulking kitten food!

    1. Ooo, what popcorn is this?! I am a popcorn fanatic! I’ll have to try the Amish popcorn.

      1. It’s a tiny white kernel called Lady Fingers packed independently at Stringtown Grocery in Kalona, IA (https://www.yelp.com/biz/stringtown-grocery-kalona)! We had a red kernel popcorn that was also good, and we’re finishing up a bag of blue kernels that pop into massive poofs — fun, but we prefer the Lady Fingers.

I think this is a perfect dish to make in honor of March (and Irish heritage)! Using turkey kielbasa is a healthy alternative,= to pork or beef kielbasa, and you still get that smoky, flavorful taste! If I were to win, I would use my winnings to pay for spring clothing for my four little ones, and I would also love to put some of it towards a nice mini family weekcation (weekend vacation)! Thank you for the chance to win!

    1. A mini family vacation sounds amazing!! I could use one right about now, haha.

  4. i have never had anything from Germany..and this sounds like a total weeknight dinner!

    1. :-O I can’t believe you’ve never had German food! Although, I have never had Nepali food. :) We need to try each others recipes haha!

  6. Looks like a delicious St. Patty’s Day dinner!

    1. Thanks, Blair! I hope you try it!

  7. I love an easy one pan meal and this one looks super delicious! Subbing out turkey kielbasa for the original is brilliant! Great recipe and great giveaway too!

    1. Turkey kielbasa tastes great, and has so much less fat per serving. I’m glad you liked the recipe!
